The Wright Brothers Memorial
The Wright Brothers National Memorial
| Content - Attractions |
The Wright Brothers National Memorial is located in Kill Devil Hills. This is the site of the first powered, manned, controlled flight in December of 1903.
The most prominent feature of the memorial is a huge stone monument at the top of a hill. Many people, at first, think this is where the historic flights occurred. The hill was used by the Wright Brothers to test their gliders, not their powered aircraft. The location of the first flight is slightly to the north and is marked by a series of smaller stones laid flush in the ground commemorating the distances of those first flights.
There is also a visitor's center and recreations of the work shed you see below.
