Lighthouses
| Content - Attractions |
There are several lighthouses in the Outer Banks including the beautiful and famous Hatteras Light. Not all of the lighthouses are open to the public.
The dangers posed by the shoals of the Outer Banks to shipping caused the Federal Government to construct a series of Lighthouses along the shore. Fortunately for us, these lighthouses survive today. Most of them are open to visitors (always check first before making the trip)
Tips:
- Wear comfortable shoes. There are a lot of steps
- Consider bringing binoculars and a video camera as well as your regular camera.
- For ladies, remember that most of the steps are metal grating that can be seen through
- Give yourself plenty of time to get to the top and then enjoy the view.
- If lightning is imminent, or high winds, the lighthouses will be closed to visitors.

Bodie Island Lighthouse |
| Cape Lookout Lighthouse This is an active lighthouse and is closed to the public for most of the year. The Lighthouse is on Core Banks Island that is only accessible via a private ferry. It is located at the Southern End of the Outer Banks. Locating it proved to be a little difficult. The map below should help. You can see the lighthouse in the overhead image. If you zoom out carefully, you should be able to get a good idea of it's exact location.

| Oak Island Lighthouse
This lighthouse is located on the mainland at the southern end of the Outer Banks Opposite Bald Island. The tower is a little different from the other lighthouses in the area. It is relatively new, having been built in 1958. Unlike most lighthouses, it is designed to NOT sway in the wind. Another unique feature is the absence of the ubiquitous spiral staircase found in most other lighthouses. Instead, there are a series of ships ladders. The site has a great set of photos of the unique interior design of this lighthouse. Tours can be arranged to the second level For more information, see the Oak Island Lighthouse Brochure.

There is also a brochure available from the National Parks Service with additional information about the Lighthouses.
